Summary

CLIMAR addresses the structural phenomenon of climate change, which poses severe and often irreversible impacts. Tourism, a high-energy and environmentally impactful sector, has increasingly been recognized as a significant contributor to pollutants driving climate change. At the same time, the tourism sector is experiencing the negative effects of climate change. This is especially relevant in many Latin American countries, where tourism also plays a crucial role in employment generation.

CLIMAR seeks to link interdisciplinary research, innovation, and knowledge transfer with higher education curriculum development and continuous professional training. The goal is to equip the tourism sector to effectively face climate change and mitigate its impacts, with a strong emphasis on incorporating circular economy principles into tourism policy. This approach will promote the development of adaptive and sustainable tourism services, fostering a flexible and diversified business landscape.

By focusing on an economic model built on resilience, human well-being, social equality, reduced environmental risks, and effective waste management, CLIMAR aims to maintain the competitiveness of tourist destinations. The project’s initiatives will help the tourism sector adapt to evolving environmental challenges while advancing sustainability and long-term growth.
